RBCC2 vs Roeselare CC (away)

RBCC lost by 7 wickets

Match Report

Due to a very late change of venue, Saturday got off to a frustrating start for the Taverners as they were caught up in traffic, with lots of Belgians heading to the coast to enjoy the weekend sunshine. This resulted in us arriving late and therefore forfeiting the toss, as well as seeing the game reduced to 40 over per side, despite only being about 30 minutes late – the home team were clearly desperate to get away early after the game. Although captain Manuj was given no choice in the matter, he was happy to bat first and the team made steady progress as Deepak and Abdulwahed looked comfortable. They kept the scoreboard ticking over until the 9th over when Abdulwahed  played one big shot too many. Deepak was very unlucky to be out in the next over as he got under a short ball and beautifully guided it to third man, only for the fielder who was hiding in the shade of a big tree to appear out of nowhere and take a good catch. Jawad and Manuj then steadied the ship and put on a solid 64 to take RBCC past 100 before the skipper, who looked set, hit a pull shot straight up and was out caught. The idea to move Tipu up the order seemed to have worked when he hit his first ball for 6 but sadly he too was out caught – a common mode of dismissal for RBCC  on Saturday. Jawad took few risks and as a half century was starting to look probable, he slapped a wide ball straight to point. New man Prateek played positively and found the boundary several times but was also unable to convert his start into a big score. Ricky was out bowled a few overs later, leaving Shahbaz and Matt to try to take the Taverners close to the full 40 overs. With 4 overs left, Shahbaz tried to up the run rate but was unable to clear the field, bringing Nitesh to the crease, who hit a glorious shot for 4 before being trapped LBW. Number 11 Sachin and Matt then added 8 from the last 7 balls thanks to some good running, both men ending up not out, leaving RBCC with 169 from the full 40 overs.

Roeselare looked to make a positive start and it almost cost them with the opener hitting a ball straight up to mid on off Ricky’s bowling, but the chance was sadly dropped, an error which ultimately cost RBCC a chance at the win. Tipu did manage to make a breakthrough in the 8th over and Ricky struck again in the 11th, the catches taken well by Shahbaz and Manuj respectively, but the damage was already done. The opener and number 4 began to tee off and every bowler was smashed between mid off and cow corner. Matt managed to bowl the number 4 batsman, who ended up on 35 from 20 balls, giving the Taverners some hope, which soon disappeared as the next overs all went for at least 15 runs. The star of the show was undoubtedly the opener, who ended up on 105 not out from just 51 balls, and fully deserved to be on the winning team. Had he been caught when he was only on 10 however, it could have been a very different story.
