RBCC2 vs Leuven CC (home)

Match Report

On one of the hottest days of the year RBCC and Leuven met for a 45 over white ball friendly, our own Khuram leading a mixed group of RBCC member’s with-a-Leuven-connection, alongside some of the club’s regular tape ball players. With strong demand places the captains agreed to field 14 a side, with rotating fielders.

Winning the toss your author elected to bat. Arun and Matt started solidly putting on 30 for the 1st wicket before Matt was bowled. Waqas upped the run rate immediately as he and Arun took the total to almost 100 before Vinay brilliantly caught Arun for 22. Hameel joined Waqas as the pair began to assert dominance.

Sibling and club rivalries made the atmosphere friendly and competitive. Khuram rotated his bowlers seeking a breakthrough, Maqsood bowling a short but testing spell to Waqas. Sameel went for 3 sixes in an over as Waqas reached a powerful 50, but he had his revenge taking an excellent one handed caught and bowled to remove the 1st team skipper set for a hundred. Hameel was joined by Sam who didn’t last long and was replaced by Jitendra. This pair kept up the pressure on Leuven in the searing heat, with Hameel punishing a tiring attack before he had to retire hurt with a sore hamstring on 47.

Jitendra’s innings was getting going through his helmet caused some umpiring problems as it makes a sound very similar to being caught behind ;-0 Wasooq and Abdul added some much needed Impetus and for a while 300 looked possible. But Leuven stuck to their task to remove both players in quick succession. Nitesh accompanied by Sachin took RBCC to 279 and a challenging total.

RBCC took the field at 5.30 to defend their total with the aggressive pairing of Usman Malik and Shahbaz opening up. Waqas quickly cleaned up Shahbaz before Usman took out his long handle and took on the short stuff. 2 fours and 2 sixes later Waqas got his revenge with a good catch in the deep from Abdul, the first of 3. Nitesh and Matt combined to take back control of the run rate bowling a tight line to Vinay and key man Maqsood, the only RBCC player to carry his bat through an innings since life President Ted Vorzanger did against the combined forces in Mons in 1957 ;-0 Vinay was teased out by Nitesh and Matt accounted for Maqsood caught-behind, much to the jubilation of the home team.

Your author kept the Nitesh and Matt combination going for 14 or so overs as the pressure and the run rate steadily increased. Pankaj and Muhammed didn’t last long, but Deepak looked set to book in for bed and breakfast;. When joined by Khuram, Leuven steadily got back into the game. Sachin and Tipu worked hard to keep them in check but your author was getting worried as Khuram began to find the boundary with increasing regularity and our catching began to let us down. Bowling from the bottom end the RBCC skipper plugged away as Abdul and Waqas took control at the golf course end.

A good catch to remove Deepak was the spark for some tighter bowling as Waqas and Chris tried to stop Khuram hitting sixes. In the end Sameel and Khuram got very close to our total but not quite close enough as two tired but happy teams retreated to the clubhouse for drinks. RBCC had bowled well, and until the last 10 or so overs, fielded well Matt, Waqas and Sachin taking two wickets, Nitesh 3, Abdul, Tipu and Chris one each. Both teams very much look forward to the re-match later this season.
