RBCC1 vs Ostend CC (away)

RBCC lost by 4 wickets

Match Report

Royal Brussels CC kicked off their first division campaign by playing against Ostend CC in Ostend. Winning the toss and electing to bat first Royal Brussels opened with Gregg Hawson & Prateek Gupta. The wicket seemed difficult at the start of the day and both openers were cautious. The first one to get dismissed was Prateek followed soon by Jitendra. Gregg made sure he saw off the new ball by playing defensively but got out while trying to play an uppish drive at long on for 13. Chris Hutchins came in at number 5 but couldn’t stay longer with the captain Usman Azim who was in at number 4. Having reduced to 20-4 in 11 overs it seemed a monumental task to play 50 overs and post a decent total.

Skipper Usman Azim was joined by the 17 year old Ehsanullah and they both started to play cautiously as Royal Brussels could not afford to lose any further wickets. Trying to bring order to the innings both batsmen stuck to the plan and kept ticking the scoreboard without taking any risks. The 59 run partnership ended in the 28th over when Usman Azim tried to go for an expensive drive which resulted in a catch. Hameel came in to bat at number 7 and was LBW first ball to give the momentum back to Ostend CC.

At this stage Royal Brussels was in deep trouble and playing 50 overs almost seemed an uphill task. Khurram joined Ehsanullah who was sticking around and kept the gates closed from his end. Khurrum, a naturally aggressive batsman read the situation well and kept rotating the strike without taking any risks. Both batsmen were looking confident and run rate started to improve. Ehsanullah reached 50 on his first division debut game and received a warm round of applause from the dug out.

The hard hitting batsman Khurrum scored his first 50 of the season and decided to break the shackles. He went after Ostend bowlers by smashing 8 sixes and 4 fours in all directions. The opposition was unable to contain Khurrum who was supported by Ehsanullah. In a remarkable turn of events Royal Brussels were scoring almost 10 runs an over in the last 10 overs of the innings. Khurrum was dismissed in the last over of the innings for 95 off 61 balls. He received a standing ovations from his team mates for his brilliant batting. That did not stop the momentum for Royal Brussels and Wasooq Bub going in at number 9 and belted 2 sixes in the last over making it 244/7 in 50 overs. Ehsanullah remained unbeaten on 71* off 131 balls.

After the innings break, Royal Brussels were charged to take on the field as they had a decent score to defend. Usman Malik & Wasooq were the opening bowlers for Royal Brussels. The team was rewarded by some sharp fielding from Hameel Hayat who ran out one of their opening batsman in the second over of the innings. Ostend was scoring at almost 6 an over and that forced the first change.

Usman Malik was replaced by skipper Usman Azim who straight away got a wicket on his first ball forcing the batsman to edge one to the keeper. His nice line & lengths kept the batsmen on their toes and his first spell brought the team 3 wickets for 16 runs in his 5 overs spell. The captain made some smart decisions which kept the screws tight on the opposition. Wasooq was replaced by Khurrum who was once again ready to have a go at the opposition but this time with the ball in hand. Khurrum was very economical during his spell and kept the batsman in check.

The skipper decided to introduce spin by bringing in Sameel who kept bowling tight lines and kept building pressure by bowling dot balls. Ehsanullah, the leg spinner came from the other end and instantly started to trouble the batsmen. Having reduced Ostend CC to 61/4 they kept ticking the scoreboard at a slow pace. The 50 runs partnership was finally ended by Hameel Hayat which was helped by a sharp catch by Usman Azim at short mid-wicket. The game was in the balance but the opposition had some seasoned batsman in their lower order. Ostend CC with needing almost run a ball started to go after Royal Brussels bowlers. The fielding side couldn’t manage to hang on to their catches and kept leaking runs. With the last recognised pair on the wicket Ostend CC managed to completed the run chase in the 49th over and won by 4 wickets.

It was a closely fought game and Royal Brussels truly showed that they belong to the top division. The team had self-belief and looked hungry to do well. With the season just started the signs look promising for Royal Brussels with a mix of seasoned and new talented players in the mix.
