RBCC1 vs Beveren CC (home)

RBCC won by 40 runs

Match Report

After a successful Ladies’ Day on Saturday, Sunday saw a return to league cricket as the first team took on a strong Beveren side at Ohain (their home game). With the sun shining, Waqas won the toss and elected to bat first. Maqsood started by smashing a free hit straight back down the ground for 4 before being hit on the pads fourth ball and waiting a full minute for Scotty to make his decision and raise the finger. This brought Waqas to the crease to join Usman Malik and the pair put on a quick-fire 34 before Usman played one big shot too many and finally fell for 23 off just 20 balls, leaving RBCC 40-2 off 6 overs.

With captain and vice captain at the crease, things were looking good until Waqas (26) was caught in two minds and played around a straight ball. Usman Azim then felt the pressure of a slowing run rate and tried to get things going, unfortunately finding  a fielder in the process. Jitendriya “Pintu” Swain (25) and Ehsan put on a partnership of 39 for the 6th wicket and then Khuram and Ehsan put on 40 for the 7th wicket to raise RBCC to 177-6. Khuram played with a great mix of power and timing and was eventually out for an enterprising 74 from just 77 balls, including 12 4s and a 6. The tail was finished off quickly, leaving Wasooq not out on 10 and the team all out for 243 off 46.2 overs.

Beveren got off to a good start as their openers seemed to be having a competition to see who could hit the most runs into cow corner. Waqas introduced spin into the attack early to try to counter their attacking style and it paid off as Vinay built pressure and then broke the partnership as Usman (I’ll let you guess which one) took a brilliant catch running backwards to dismiss the destructive opener (22 off 18 balls).

Usman Malik then dismissed the other opener (35) before Waqas found the edge of the number three batsman (25) and Usman Azim took his second fantastic catch low to his left and popped the ball up to the umpire straight away as if he takes catches like those for breakfast! Beveren seemed to take the fall of wickets in their stride and were 138-3 at the halfway point. Debutant Matt then came on and removed the number four batsman (34 off 30 balls) with his second ball, before closing out a wicket maiden. The timing of this wicket proved crucial as it started a small collapse, with Khuram taking a wicket soon after, followed by Matt taking his second and Maqsood getting in on the action to reduce Beveren to 175-7.

The number nine (18 off 21 balls) stuck with the number five to get them up to 200 before edging Waqas to Pintu, who managed to hold on to a relatively difficult catch, despite having dropped a few easier ones beforehand. Maqsood struck again in the next over and Waqas finished it off in the over after that, finally dismissing the number five batsman who batted well for his 37 off 78 balls, with Pintu clinging onto the catch to secure a hard-fought and well-deserved victory for RBCC by 40 runs.
