Match Report

On Sunday 24th June Royal Brussels CC hosted Rowlands Castle CC at Ohain. The Hosts arrived early to set up the ground for a mid-summer garden party hosted jointly by Royal Brussels & BBCA. With Chairman Nick leading the preparations it didn’t take long to set up and Royal Brussels was ready for the game and garden party in time. The game was a 35-over affair with Royal Brussels invited to bat by Rowlands Castle CC after winning the toss. Royal Brussels had a surprise inclusion with their veteran player Benito Giordano agreeing to play and was asked to open with Alex Tabor. Both openers were fluent in their strokes and looked comfortable. Benito, who after 10 years was batting didn’t lookout of practice and scored some fours and a six while Alex Tabor kept playing along theground. Both openers had to retire after 30. Next pair to walk at the wicket were Prateek & Jawad. Prateek after starting off watchfully went for a pull shot which went straight into the fielder at midwicket. On the other hand, Jawad Mian kept ticking the scoreboard by regularly rotating the strike. Manuj looked in decent nick and kept playing his natural aggressive shots.

With a hot day and nothing in the wicket for the bowlers, they kept struggling and both batsmen were again able to reach the 30 run mark without any trouble. Royal Brussles were able to score 258 in 35 overs with some useful contributions by Sameel Hayat, Arun Thamilarasu and Farrukh Malik. The only unfortunate batsman of the day was Nitesh who was eager to bat all day and got out on the first ball. He decided to take the long walk back as he wasn’t willing to face his team mates after the embarrassing shot he offered. With enough runs in the bank for Royal Brussels, both teams were invited for teas by Belgian British Community Association. It was an excellent atmosphere at the club with over 150 people present for the match & garden party. This made the occasion very special for the players who were able to show off their skills in front of a decent crowd.

Rowlands CC started off their innings after the break and they were carefully negotiating the new ball. Tipu Sethi was making the ball swing both ways which made life difficult for the opposition. He was able to get through the defence and got the opposition batsman out bowled. Sachin was disciplined with his lines & lengths from the golf course end. Nitesh was introduced as first change who took over from Tipu Sethi. Having put already many strong performances in the first half of the season Nitesh was continuing where he left from the last game. He was able to pitch the bowl in good areas. He finished with figures of 2/22 from 7 overs. Royal Brussels bowlers kept bowling with discipline and didn’t give away many runs. In the end, Royal Brussels restricted the opposition for 142/5 in 35 overs winning by 116 runs.

The royal affair of the day was midsummer garden party which saw many people come to the ground. The guest list included British Ambassador for Belgium Ms. Alison Rose and other dignitaries. Various stalls were set up who were selling food and drinks. All proceeds  collected on the day went for charity purpose. Chariman Nick organized few games for the kids which they seemed to thoroughly enjoy it and winners took home prizes. It was another enjoyable day at Royal Brussels. This year has been rather fantastic with cricket and social events combined together. Royal Brussels is truly leading the way on how cricket clubs should be operating by keeping the social aspect alive and kicking!
