RBCC vs Gent CC (home)

RBCC won by 7 runs

Match Report

With threatening clouds overhead and a strong batting line-up at his disposal, skipper Manuj chose to make first use of the wicket after winning the toss. Alex and Nofil made a steady start before Nofil’s eyes lit up at a full toss, which he sadly missed. Alex was then joined at the crease by Basit and the pair scored at a decent rate before RBCC lost two quick wickets. Alex however was undeterred and continued to give a batting masterclass, showing how to pace and build an innings in the longer format. He scored a fluent 80 before succumbing in the final over when his runner, Jawad, who had previously had a calming influence on Alex and scored 36 runs himself, failed to make his ground attempting a quick single. RBCC ended their innings on 217 – a more-than- useful total on a ground where boundaries were hard to come by as the outfield took on a fair amount of water during several rain delays. Sameel added 23 quick runs at the end of the innings but arguably his most appreciated contribution was the excellent food!

On a slippery track, the first ball of the defence was an inauspicious no-ball, although the resulting free hit crashed into the base of the stumps (in fact there were 4 no balls during the Gent innings and each of them was followed by what would have been a wicket, were it not a free hit!). Thankfully things improved from there, Matt bowled a probing length and beat the outside edge more than once before tailing one back in late through the gate and onto middle stump. From the other end, Hameel was as economical as he was threatening and ended the match with two wickets. The captain then led from the front, bowling with excellent pace whilst leaking very few runs and also ended up with two wickets (the first of the two hitting the top of the stumps so finely that initially most players thought it was an edge to the keeper before noticing the bail on the ground). Gent came back strongly in the middle overs and took on the three-pronged spin attack, although Basit took two good wickets and Nofil, who was perhaps unfortunate to have several LBW appeals turned down, took one. Gent’s reply was aided by RBCC’s own Shrikanth, who had graciously agreed to play for the opposition in the 12-a- side format which was adopted for the day. Sadly, it was also aided by a number of dropped catches and some sloppy fielding. Fourth spinner Nitesh bowled two tidy overs and was rewarded with a wicket when Vincent took an excellent catch and just avoided carrying it over the boundary for six. Vincent also provided a touch of genius, initially fumbling in the outfield to encourage the batsmen to attempt a second run and then hitting the stumps directly to remove the danger-man. The game looked set to go down to the wire as Manuj restricted them well in the first over of his second spell and was again unlucky not to take the 11 th and final wicket. Needing ten to win from just two overs, Matt came back from his favoured Golf Course End. His first four balls produced two singles and two dots and the tension was finally broken on the fifth ball as he nipped one through the batsman’s defences to earn RBCC a hard-fought and incredibly well deserved victory by just 7 runs.
