RBCC-T20 vs Antwerp CC (away)

RBCC lost by 3 wickets

Match Report

Losing the toss, RBCC were asked to bat first in a weather affected 18 over game against our old rivals Antwerp.   With what we thought could be a quarter final place up for grabs the team was highly motivated following a good win against Verviers last weekend.

Captain Waqas paired the aggressive Prateek with the more cautious Deepak to open up, a short-lived partnership as Prateek top edged a pull for 1.   Deepak soon followed bringing Alex and the captain together for some exciting stroke-play.  3 consecutive fours from Alex meant he took a risk too many to be bowled for a quick fire 12.  Manuj and Chris came and went quickly – both run out for a single as the captain looked to maintain the strike – a good policy as the captain continued his rich vein of form.

Khuram and Waqas were getting the run-rate moving and a decent total looked possible.  But with bad light threatening an early finish, the umpires reduced the game to 15 overs affecting a decision which negatively affected our match planning.

Khuram departed caught for 9 only for Hameel and Waqas to continue the good work as we headed to toward the 100 mark.   Some strong hitting from the captain and Wasooq took us to 112, with Waqas reaching another 50 with 5 fours and 2 sixes.

Antwerp were strong in the field and bowled tightly, giving a good example of how we needed to defend a relatively modest total.

Opening up, Waqas and Hameel bowled tightly creating some much needed pressure.  Wasooq’s first over saw him go for 2 consecutive sixes then get their key number 3 out caught and bowled and then get another to leave the home team at 40 for 3.

Sameel’s only over was exploited by the home team as they targeted the short leg side boundary.  With the game turning toward Antwerp, Chris and Wasooq applied some pressure, the former getting 2 wickets in an over, and we saw a glimmer of hope.     Khuram took another wicket but their run rate was climbing and ultimately we couldn’t defend our total.

A strong bowling display but a patch fielding one meant we fell short of victory.   But we fought hard and continued the progression of earlier weeks, the team in excellent spirits ahead of first league game.
