RBCC-Ladies vs Köln CC (Germany)

Match Report

On Saturday 17 June, RBCC Ladies hopped in their cars and drove down to Cologne for this key fixture in their German campaign.

In the first of the two games, captain Nicky Thrupp opened the batting with team stalwart Ro Lister. Ro was not long at the crease with a thrilling but ultimately ill-fated hit into the air which stuck in the hands of the German fielder. Veera joined Nicky to score a determinative 19 not out however the partnership was brought to an end with an uncharacteristic hit onto wicket by Nicky for 12. Relative new comer Emily was next into the fray scoring 4 with some sprightly running between the wicket which was brought to an early end when a good straight ball was delivered back to the bowler’s hands. Paromita brought the overs to an end with 1 not out. RBCC had scored 96 for 3 with just 37 off the bat and 59 in extras.

Aware that tight bowling and active fielding would be required in order to defend such a total, RBCC went back out into the field. The bowling was opened by captain Nicky and strategic thinker Paromita with the first wicket coming from Veera’s bowling and a catch from Paromita. Sara bowled a solid 3 overs including the first of her three identical wickets of the day: caught by Emily at square leg. The third wicket came from a sly LBW from Paromita with Esmarie’s novel bowling style also playing a key role in the line up. RBCC sadly had too many wides with Cologne achieving the total in 16 overs winning the game comfortably with 28 runs off the bat but a massive 69 in extras.

After a delicious lunch from Cologne and with the weather starting to brighten up, RBCC started the second game in the field. The bowling started well with Sara taking the scalp of Cologne’s experienced and talented batter Monica, again caught by Emily at square leg. The wickets kept falling with Paromita taking a magnificent catch off her own bowling and clean bowling another. Nicky took a difficult catch off Emily’s bowling and clean bowled another. Alix’s increasing confidence and enthusiasm as wicket keeping was rewarded with an excellent run out taking the wicket tally to an impressive six.  After their 20 overs Cologne had scored an imposing 124 including 78 of extras which was unrepresentative of the improvement in RBCC’s fielding and bowling compared to the morning session.

Nicky opened the batting in the second innings with Alix. After a solid start, Alix was returned to the club house by a run out to be replaced by Esmarie. All Esmarie’s dedication in the nets was apparent with some impressive technique earning her 6 runs, sadly brought to an end LBW. Veera replaced Esmarie and with Nicky formed a solid and long lasting partnership peppered with some exciting fours brought the game to an end, reaching the total thrillingly in the 19th over. Veera 19 not out and Nicky a massive 33 not out constituting 64 runs off the bat and 61 extras. A solid win showing that good batting can be as decisive in a win as massive scores from extras.

RBCC Ladies have two more fixtures in this league on 8 July and 15 July both at home. With this win and loss, RBCC retain the possibility of finishing top of the league.
