The dinner was held, thanks to Pierre and Kashan who organised it, in a swish restaurant of the newly renovated old customs building of Tour and Taxis, and just over 40 people were present. Colin Wolfe acted as MC and battled manfully against the noise and music to introduce the speakers.
Guy kicked off the proceedings for the “Stevie Wonder catching award” with an amusing list of statistics highlighting the luckless individuals who had dropped the most catches, or had the worst ratio of catches missed compared to chances offered. It transpired that Geno “The Legend” Marini had most dropped catches, but for his outstanding act of incompetence in dropping two dollies in a league game, the award went to Gregg Hawson. A nice touch of nepotism as his brother Guy was the previous winner.
Duncan Lodge then stepped up to the plate for the “Champagne moment”, and gave us a run by run (of which there weren’t many) account of how his unselfish batting (the words stodgy Lodgy spring to mind here), helped the winner of the trophy which went to Brighton Watambwa for his sensational 104 against Arcadians whilst Duncan made 6.
Richard Maclear then did his best to present the award for the “Outstanding Performance” but was drowned out by the pounding of the disco music which had been turned on. The winner was in fact Geno Marini. Not only did he make runs but he produced a superb piece of bowling, taking 6-14 off 8 overs to destroy the Greens in a vital league match. Geno was presented with a memento which, as he and Katie will be returning to Australia early in 2010, said the following;
Presented to Geno for his all round batting and bowling, in the 2009 season, in particular his 6-14 against one of the strongest sides in the Belgian league. Since he joined the RBCC, Geno has been involved in all activities of the club, whether as a player, helping with work, or joining in social
events, and we will miss his presence amongst us as well as his inimitable sense of humour. We wish him, and his charming wife Kate, all success and happiness on their return to Australia, and hope this modest document will serve as a reminder of the happy days they spent with us.
The award for “Best Bowling” was presented by Pierre Etellin to Eddie Wright for his consistent and outstanding bowling throughout the 2009 season, particularly in division 1 league matches.
Ted Vorzanger presented the “Clubman of the Year” Trophy to Guy Hawson and Chris Weeks but as it had become impossible to hear anybody due to the noise there was no speech. This is what would have been said;
“Many people help to make this club the success that it is. I would especially like to mention Alan Wilson and Jalal and Danielle for helping out with the ICC U-19 tournament, Nick Compton for the Sixes, Steve Robinson for always being there for the pre, and after, working parties as well as Chris Hutchins, and especially Kumar for his contribution the club in many ways. And let us not forget the ladies, with Sarah Weeks and Sarah Maughan supporting their partners and also helping out around the club. Last but not least, Pierre Etellin for his mammoth task in dealing with the accounts, captaining the 1st team, taking care of bar supplies, and in general being the chief cook and bottle washer”.
The awards to Chris and Guy read as follows;
Guy Hawson
Presented to Guy Hawson for his extraordinary efforts and work, above and beyond what can be expected of a member, in recognition of his dedication to the club, and in appreciation of his constant support and service to the club throughout the 2009 season.
Chris Weeks
Presented to Chris Weeks in recognition of his services to the club, and in appreciation of his unflagging work, effort and support throughout the 2009 season.
Thanks to all of those that attended the Ceremony and of course to all the RBCC members that participated during the 2009 season. It has been an extremely successful year and we look forward to a repeat performance in 2010.
